At the end of July 2015 a truly remarkable event took place at Southport Rugby Club
An attempt to play the longest game of Rugby Union in history.
The previous record was just under 25 hours. Two teams of Southport players carried out this remarkable feat of physical and mental endurance and achieved a time of 26 hours and 36 minutes.
This is currently awaiting ratification as a world record by Guinness but it was largely held as a charity fundraising event for two causes. Firstly to raise money for former club captain Gareth Lang’s daughter Ella in order to purchase a specialist 'physiotherapy vest' to help her with her cope with her cystic fibrosis and secondly a donation for Alder Hey Hospital.
The total raised currently stands at over £30,000.
